Bone broth benefits for dogs

I’ve been passionate about recommending bone broth to our customers for years! It’s such a great way to get even the fussiest dogs to enjoy their meals, keep senior pups hydrated and aid in healing leaky guts, which can be a real challenge for those dealing with allergies or skin irritations. Recently, I was thrilled to learn about an exciting research project involving Rachel Down from Boil & Broth and Carol Hughes from PetBiome. With the rise of inflammatory diseases in dogs, they’ve highlighted how crucial a healthy immune system is. Their research shows that bone broth can enhance gut health by boosting microbial diversity, reducing harmful bacteria, and strengthening the gut wall, which ultimately supports overall immune function.  I’m absolutely delighted to announce that we’re now offering Boil & Broth in our Customer Shop for our customers and their furry friends!

1. Supporting Joint Health and Mobility

Bone broth is a powerhouse supplement for your dog’s joint health! Packed with collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid, this nourishing broth supports and maintains healthy joints by targeting cartilage and connective tissue repair. Collagen helps rebuild cartilage, which cushions and protects the joints, while glucosamine and chondroitin boost elasticity, acting like a natural shock absorber to reduce joint stiffness and pain. Hyaluronic acid keeps everything smoothly lubricated, maintaining fluidity for flexible, pain-free movement. Add in anti-inflammatory amino acids like glycine and proline and bone broth becomes a delicious and gentle way to help your dog stay active, comfortable and ready for adventure at any age!

2. Boosting Digestive Health and Comfort

Bone broth does more than just support digestion—it helps create a healthy gut environment by feeding beneficial bacteria while starving harmful ones. Packed with amino acids like glycine and proline, bone broth nourishes the gut lining, creating a stable environment where “good” bacteria can flourish. A well-maintained gut lining prevents leaks, reducing the chance for “bad” bacteria and toxins to pass through into the bloodstream, which can cause inflammation, allergies and digestive discomfort. Additionally, the collagen and gelatin in bone broth act as prebiotics, feeding the beneficial bacteria that aid in digestion, immunity, and nutrient absorption. With regular bone broth, you’re helping to create a healthy, balanced microbiome, which in turn boosts your dog’s immune response, reduces GI issues, and contributes to better overall health.

3. Promoting a Healthy Liver for Natural Detoxification

The liver is the body’s natural filter, especially crucial for dogs who explore the world with their mouths. Glycine, an amino acid found abundantly in bone broth, aids liver function and boosts its natural detoxifying abilities. By enhancing liver health, bone broth helps protect dogs from the toxins and impurities they encounter.

4. Packed with Protein and Essential Nutrients

Boil & Broth stands out for its protein-packed bone broth, thanks to their focus on high-quality, locally/ethically sourced ingredients and a careful cooking process. They use grass-fed animals, which means this broth is loaded with essential nutrients and beneficial omega-3s, without the junk often found in conventional options. Their slow-simmering method pulls out maximum goodness from the bones, resulting in a broth rich in collagen, gelatin, and important amino acids like glycine and proline – great for supporting your dog’s joints, skin, and gut health. Plus, they keep it simple by sticking to the nutritional value of the bones and marrow and skipping unnecessary additives.

Other companies can use a heat process called UHT and as a result, the amino acids, which are vital for gut health and other bodily functions, lose their effectiveness. Insights from recent studies emphasise that the beneficial work in the gut is largely attributed to these amino acids, highlighting their importance for overall health.

5. Improving Skin and Coat Health

Rich in collagen and gelatin, bone broth promotes skin elasticity and hydration, helping to maintain a strong, shiny coat. Essential amino acids like glycine and proline reduce inflammation and support collagen production, crucial for healthy skin. The broth’s high water content aids in hydration, preventing dryness and flakiness, while vitamins and minerals like B vitamins and zinc support skin health and foster a vibrant coat.

6. Hydration and Appetite Boost

Bone broth is not only nourishing but also hydrating, making it a great option for dogs who may be reluctant to drink water. Its delicious flavour can stimulate the appetite in picky eaters or dogs recovering from illness. Serve it on its own or mix it with their food for a tasty boost.
